Basic Aikido terms/glossary

aikido = the way through the life energy to harmony/unity

aihanmi katatedori = wrist grip, right on right or left on left

katadori = shoulder grip

shomenuchi = cut or blow to head

Tsuki = fist strike

mae ukemi = forward fall

ushiro ukemi = backward fall

taisabaki = body move, evasive movement in aikido

kamae/gamae = guard position

ura = backside, inside, reverse side

omote = front, surface

uke = the one receiving, attacker in aikido

nage (tori) = throw, also used for the one doing the aikido technique

ikkyo = first teaching, pinning technique

iriminage = inward throw, throwing technique

kotegaeshi = reversed wrist, throwing technique

atemi = strike to the body

yame = stop

onegai shimasu = please, asking for something

arigato = thanks

domo arigato gozaimashita = thank you so much, for something completed
